There are bands you photograph, there are bands you watch, and then there are bands that grab you by the collar and drag you straight into the middle of the fucking party.
Saint Agnes are very much the third kind.
When the band hit the stage at the Rickshaw Theatre, they brought with them an attitude that could have powered the entire building. There was swagger, there was grit, there was danger — and there was enough rock ’n’ roll attitude to make Joan Jett proud.
And Vancouver absolutely ate it up.
The crowd went wild for Saint Agnes, feeding off every movement, every riff, every dirty little grin thrown from the stage. There was a feeling that something was happening in that room that you didn’t want to miss — the kind of performance where standing still simply isn’t an option.
For a band making their first trip through Canada and North America, Saint Agnes certainly didn’t arrive like newcomers. They owned that stage.
Their sound carries that delicious combination of old-school rock ’n’ roll attitude and modern punch, but it’s the band’s live presence that really makes the impression. There is an unapologetic confidence to Saint Agnes that feels wonderfully rebellious. They don’t just perform the songs — they inhabit them.
And watching them work the Rickshaw, it became pretty damn obvious why they’ve been turning heads.
The show was packed with energy from beginning to end, with the band throwing themselves into the performance and the crowd responding in kind. It wasn’t simply a case of musicians playing to an audience; it felt like a two-way exchange of energy, with Vancouver giving Saint Agnes plenty back.
Frontwoman Kitty Austen is an absolute force of nature onstage. There is a rawness and confidence to her performance that commands attention without ever feeling forced. Every pose, sneer, strut and scream feels like it belongs there.
There is also something wonderfully familiar about that attitude — that classic rock-star swagger where you get the sense that the performer knows exactly how fucking good they are and isn’t about to apologize for it.
Saint Agnes are currently out on the road with The Rasmus, and if their Rickshaw performance was any indication, this tour is giving North American audiences one hell of an introduction to the band.
For a first Canadian/North American run, they made one hell of an entrance.
Personally?
I fucking loved covering this show.
Some performances are fun to photograph. Some are technically challenging. And some bands make you forget you’re supposed to be working because you’re having such a ridiculously good time watching them.
Saint Agnes were absolutely the latter.
If this was Vancouver’s introduction to Saint Agnes, I’d say we got a pretty fucking good one.
Keep an eye on this band.
They’ve got the attitude, they’ve got the songs, they’ve got the stage presence — and judging by the reaction at the Rickshaw, they’ve already got an audience waiting for them to come back.
