A Night of Vikings, Death, and Brutality
April 27th | PNE Forum
The heavy metal world converged for an unforgettable night with Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Frozen Soul, bringing a relentless assault on the senses. From the icy depths of death metal to the grand theatrics of Viking warriors, this lineup left no survivors—only exhausted, exhilarated fans.
Frozen Soul – The Chill Before the Storm
Opening the night, Frozen Soul set the tone with their chilling, mid-tempo death metal. Their ominous atmosphere and crushing riffs were a perfect way to ease the crowd into the evening. Tracks like “Arctic Stranglehold” and “Encased in Ice” whipped the early arrivals into a frenzy, with their thick, groove-laden sound providing a perfect taste of what was to come. Vocalist Chad Green called out the crowd to do pushups in the pit. That was a new one for me. Their performance showcased the band’s rapidly growing stature, and fans already familiar with them made sure to deliver plenty of energy.
Obituary – Old-School Death Metal Legends
Next up was Obituary, veterans who need no introduction. They were a stark reminder that the old guard of death metal still reigns supreme. With John Tardy’s iconic, raw vocals and the band’s thick, swampy riffs, Obituary delivered a masterclass in groove and intensity. The mosh pits grew feral as the band tore through tracks like “Redneck Stomp” and “Slowly We Rot”. Their tight, no-frills performance emphasized why they are pillars of the genre—relentless, heavy, and unyielding. Obituary offered the crowd a pummeling wall of sound that was met with cheers, fists, and endless headbanging. First time seeing these guys live, and hopefully not that last. Love them!
Cannibal Corpse – A Savage Assault
Third in the lineup, Cannibal Corpse launched an all-out assault with their unrelenting brutality. They blasted into the set with “Scourge of Iron” and followed with an unforgiving onslaught of fan-favorites, including “Hammer Smashed Face” and “I Cum Blood.” George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s neck-breaking headbanging and inhuman vocals kept the crowd locked in chaos, as circle pits expanded and bodies flew across the pit. Cannibal Corpse brought their signature precision and intensity, leaving no time to catch a breath. It was everything you’d expect from one of death metal’s fiercest acts: fast, heavy, and utterly merciless. Corpsegrinder hilariously challenges everyone to a headbanging competition and joking told them they lost and suck. Love the humour, as did the crowd.
Amon Amarth – The Viking Triumph
As the headliner, Amon Amarth delivered the night’s grand finale with their signature blend of melodic death metal and Viking lore. From the moment the first note of “Guardians of Asgaard”rang out, the atmosphere turned electric. The band didn’t just play songs—they told epic tales. With massive backdrops, towering props, and Viking warriors storming the stage during “The Way of Vikings,” Amon Amarth brought their theatrical flair to full effect.
Johann Hegg’s commanding presence drew the crowd in, swinging his drinking horn high as the band plunged through a setlist that included “Cry of the Black Birds,” “Deceiver of the Gods,” and “Twilight of the Thunder God.” The audience chanted along to every battle cry, and by the time the iconic hammer of Thor crashed down during the encore, the entire venue was consumed in chaos. The combination of soaring melodies and earth-shaking riffs solidified Amon Amarth as both musicians and storytellers, leaving fans with the perfect end to a monumental night.
Verdict: A Perfect Storm of Metal Mayhem
This tour brought together different facets of extreme metal in a way that felt seamless. Frozen Soul chilled the crowd, Obituary rumbled like a thunderstorm, Cannibal Corpse unleashed pure, unrelenting savagery, and Amon Amarth delivered an epic, Viking-infused spectacle. Each band brought their unique flavor to the night, making this concert a dream for fans of death metal and melodic fury alike.
In the end, this was more than just a show—it was an experience. From start to finish, the pit never stopped moving, the air was thick with camaraderie, and each band left their mark. Whether you came for the brutality of Cannibal Corpse, the groove of Obituary, or the soaring majesty of Amon Amarth, you walked away with your metal heart full.
This was a night that won’t soon be forgotten—until the next time these titans return to conquer.
